Penfolds Re-Corking Clinic

Penfolds is bringing its world-renowned Re-Corking Clinic back to Hong Kong for the third time, offering connoisseurs and collectors a private, appointment-only opportunity to preserve the legacy of their prized Penfolds wines through personalised, one-on-one consultations.
Taking place at The Upper House on 22 and 23 August 2025, the Clinic will be hosted by Chief Winemaker Peter Gago and Winemaker Shavaughn Wells. Each qualifying bottle will be professionally opened, assessed, certified and re-corked as required, ensuring its integrity, longevity, and authenticity for years to come.
THE ULTIMATE AFTERCARE EXPERIENCE
The Penfolds Re-Corking Clinic is the epitome of luxury wine service, offering connoisseurs and collectors a unique opportunity to extend the life and legacy of their Penfolds collection. Since the first Clinic in 1991, over 200,000 bottles have been assessed globally. Inspired by Max Schubert, the creator of Grange, who famously re-corked old vintages for friends, this service is available for all cork-closure Penfolds red wines aged 15 years or older that have not been previously re-corked. The Re-Corking Clinic is a complimentary service offered to Penfolds collectors.
Penfolds Re-Corking Clinics have been hosted in major cities including Melbourne, Sydney, New York, London, Munich, Vancouver, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Singapore, cementing Penfolds’ reputation for exceptional wine aftercare and stewardship. Collectors have entrusted bottles dating back to the 1940s and 1950s, underscoring the brand’s role as a custodian of wine heritage.
Guests will receive a thorough consultation with the winemaking team, including technical assessment, topping up with current vintages, and re-capsulation if required. Each bottle returns with a signed certificate of authenticity and condition, offering added assurance especially for collectors engaged in the secondary market.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN HONG KONG
Appointments are available for eligible Penfolds reds that fall within the Green or Amber ullage zones, which indicate the wine’s fill level and condition. Wines in the Green zone do not require re-corking, while those in the Amber zone will benefit from it. Wines in the Red zone are no longer certifiable and will not be re-corked. Collectors unsure of their wine’s condition are encouraged to bring their bottles for professional evaluation. Further information is available at Penfolds’ official Digital Ullage Measure.
Beyond preservation, the Re-Corking Clinic offers an immersive experience with curated wine flights, personalised keepsakes, and expert advice on cellaring, investment potential, and custodianship.
A RENEWED COMMITMENT TO HONG KONG COLLECTORS
This marks the third time the Re-Corking Clinic is being held in Hong Kong, one of Asia’s most sophisticated and passionate fine wine markets.
First held in 2011 and returning in 2017, the previous Hong Kong Clinics serviced over 400 bottles, including rare and collectible wines such as Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 90A, Bin 333, and Bin 747 Claret. Highlights also included first vintage releases of Magill Estate Shiraz and RWT, and deep verticals of Penfolds Grange and St Henri Shiraz, a powerful testament to Hong Kong collectors’ reverence for provenance, rarity, and long-term wine stewardship.
Penfolds wines are celebrated for their distinctive character, concentration, and balance, enabling them to age gracefully even in less-than-ideal conditions. While the best bottles come from carefully controlled cellars, their longevity owes much to the robust maturation techniques pioneered by Max Schubert and his winemaking team.
“We are excited to return to Hong Kong, where collectors truly appreciate legacy and provenance,” says Peter Gago. “Every Clinic is unique, each bottle tells a different story, and our role is to help those stories endure.”
Appointments for the Re-Corking Clinic in Hong Kong are now open via Eventbrite. As space is limited, reservations are private and on a first-come, first-served basis (registration and eligibility criteria available on the website). From 4 August 2025, a limited number of public viewing slots will also be available for registration on a first-come, first-served basis.
